Legislature Takes Aim At MEDC In Budget Proposal

lssu.org

State lawmakers are taking bites out of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation budget.

A Senate subcommittee just voted to eliminate state money for a business attraction program.

The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Rick Pluta reports.

The MEDC has been a target in this budget cycle because a lot of Republicans think taxpayers shouldn’t foot the bill for business incentives. Governor Rick Snyder has reduced those incentives, but still included some in his budget proposal.

Kurt Weiss is with the governor’s budget office.

“We know it’s part of the process,” he says.  “This is by no means final anything that’s happened in the Legislature this week.”

Weiss says none of this should stop the budget from being finalized by early June – before schools, universities and local governments begin their fiscal years.
