The Hillel Jewish Student Center at MSU will host a vigil tonight in honor of the victims of the shootings at a Pittsburgh synagogue over the weekend.
Eleven people were killed in the attack at the Tree of Life Congregation on Saturday.
Wendy Starr is vice president of Israel and Jewish Programming, a student group at MSU. She says “It’s a way to bring the community together, say prayers, and think about what has happened and what we can do to more forward.”
Starr adds that since the shootings, she's observed some fear of going to a synagogue, “but also, I see people saying now more than ever, we have to be going to synagogue, because stopping that would just give in to the fear that the people who commit acts like this want people to do." Starr concludes that "it’s even more important now to go and just show your support, and be there as a member of the community.”
The candlelight vigil starts at 6:30 p.m. at MSU Hillel on Charles Street in East Lansing.
On Thursday night at 7:30, Congregation Shaarey Zedek in East Lansing will conduct a prayer vigil to honor the Pittsburgh shooting victims.
