High School Football Rankings: Weekend Review 9/22

Seven area schools were ranked in the Michigan AP Poll for Sept. 16. Tomorrow’s AP rankings should see some shuffling; not every ranked team won their game on Friday.

Okemos was tied No. 8 for Division 2, and fell to Grand Ledge 20-7 on Friday. With the win, Grand Ledge improved to 2-2, but it likely won’t be enough to make an appearance in the rankings. Okemos is now 2-2 on the year, and will likely fall out of the rankings. However, the Chiefs have a chance to redeem themselves, as they host Lansing Sexton this Friday. Sexton was No. 2 in the Division 4 polls this past week.

Local teams are strongly represented in the Division 3 poll, with DeWitt and St. Johns checking in at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. DeWitt crushed Lansing Waverly 56-12 this past weekend, with DeWitt quickly lighting up the scoreboard on a 42-0 run over the first quarter and a half of play. St. Johns defeated Mason, 42-21. Both teams are a perfect 4-0 on the year. All the other top five teams in Division 3 play won this past weekend as well, so there may not be any movement in the polls.

The lone local team in the Division 4 poll this past week was Lansing Sexton, which blew-out Jackson, 48-7. The No. 1, Saginaw Swan Valley, won its weekend game so Sexton will likely remain No. 2 this week. Keep an eye on Williamston, a team that was just outside of the top 10. Four teams ranked in the top 10 lost this weekend, so Williamston will likely move into the polls this week after their 4-0 start.

In the Division 5 poll, No. 4 Lansing Catholic Central beat Fowlerville this weekend, 48-13 to move to 4-0 on the year. The top three teams in the Division 5 poll all won as well, so there may not be much movement for Lansing Catholic Central this week.

Ithaca, ranked No. 1 in the Division 6 poll, continued their winning ways, shutting out St. Louis 54-0 this weekend. Ithaca is now 4-0 on the season.

Lastly, representing local teams in the Division 8 poll this weekend was Fowler, who checked in at No. 7 this past week. Fowler won their matchup with Fulton-Middleton, 41-16, improving to 4-0 on the season. Look for Fowler to move up this week, as Crystal Falls Forest Park, the No. 6 team, fell to Hurley, Wisc., 18-14.
