Community Calendar

Participants gather at our designated tables at BrickHaven at 6pm on the 4th Wednesday of each month*. Everyone brings a book of their choice to read. The Library Coordinator greets & welcomes everyone, participants may order drinks and food, and then we'll all silently read the book of our choice, for about 45 minutes. At that time, the Coordinator invites everyone to share a bit about the book they're reading-- people can choose to participate or not, whatever they're comfortable with. Registration required to reserve space.

John U. Bacon bestselling author and historian for his vivid storytelling and deep research will present information from his book The Gales of November. Bacon uncovered new details about the Fitzgerald's final voyage regarding the tragedy that claimed 29 lives. His writing brings fresh insight to one of the Great Lakes' most haunting mysteries cementing his reputation as a leading voice on maritime history.
Schuler Books will provide hardcover and paperback books for purchase with a credit card. Bacon will also be signing books from 10:15-10:45. Attendance at the event is required. Other books authored by John U. Bacon will be available to purchase.

From his dive to the Edmund Fitzgerald and help in rediscovery of the Carl Bradley to the unique destruction of the Daniel J Morrell and miraculous survival of Dennis Hale, Ric Mixter shares details and underwater footage that you’ve never seen in any other lecture on the topic.

Join us for a fascinating presentation on the Orphan Trains presented by Michigan author Sherry A. Burton. In the mid 1850’s, over thirty thousand children, some as young as four and five, were living on the streets of New York City; lying, cheating and stealing just to survive. Before any child labor laws or government programs aimed at helping these children, Charles Loring Brace, founder of the Children’s Aid Society, started the “family placement” or “outplacement” program in 1854. The Orphan Trains (as they were later called) ran from 1854 to 1929. During the seventy-five-year period, it is estimated that over 250K children left the streets of New York and Boston and rode the trains to find new homes in the Midwest and beyond.

Adults can gather in the daytime at the Library for interesting presentations, crafts, games -- and coffee, snacks and conversation with friends you know-- and those you've just met. Craft a Grapevine Wreath for the upcoming holidays. Wreaths are 14" and we will have an assortment of seasonal trims for you to create with!

We will have LEGOs set out in the maker space for patrons to build a LEGO creation using their imagination. When they make something, they can bring it to the front desk to show staff to get a prize. This is an all-day event, stop in anytime while the library is open to participate.
