Notes from Susi

Periodic posts from Susi Elkins, WKAR general manager and director of broadcasting
  • Here at WKAR, we love the opportunity to get out into the community, make new friends, and connect with our fellow public media fans. I've missed that over the past two years. We're looking forward to bringing WKAR to you in-person once again this spring and summer.
  • This year, over 5,300 children will receive WKAR Family Reading Kits. Made possible through community partnerships and donor support, the project is part of our commitment to supporting a culture of literacy across mid-Michigan communities.
  • In 1972, on February 4, the first episode of Off the Record aired from this public broadcasting station on the campus of Michigan State University. Now, 50 years later, Off the Record is the longest running statewide public affairs program in Michigan. I first discovered the show as a student employee at WKAR -- coming in to work and having someone say, "You're going to run camera for Off the Record."
  • In 2021, we declared our commitment to hear every voice and share every story. Throughout the twists and turns of this challenging year, WKAR's commitment to those ideals was demonstrated through special programming initiatives, virtual community events, original documentaries, local and national partnerships, and more.
  • Season's greetings! I love this time of year, as people across our community share in celebration of religious holidays, traditions of giving, friends and family, and the changing of the seasons.
  • On behalf of WKAR, I'd like to extend our warmest wishes to you and your family for a wonderful Thanksgiving season. And I'd like to thank our many supporters who make it possible for WKAR to serve your mid-Michigan community as we strive to hear every voice and share every story.
  • Hispanic Heritage Month continues with Alma's Way, Rita Moreno, Felix Contreras, Michelle Jokisch Polo, and more
  • Hear every voice. Share every story. These are ideals we’ve set for ourselves at WKAR as we look forward with optimism to the year ahead and the conversations we hope to foster within our community...
