Burying the Dead in the Shiite Holy City of Najaf

NPR translator Yasir Rashid explains how he journeyed to Najaf this week to bury his father in the vast cemetary known as the Valley of Peace. Since April, U.S.-led forces and followers of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have battled in and around the cemetery, making it difficult for Iraqis -- both Sunni and Shiia -- to bury their dead.
