Lansing, MI – Lansing, MI (MPRN) - Voters could get a chance to rework Michigan's taxes in November.
House Speaker Andy Dillon says he'd like the Legislature to work through the summer on a tax plan. He says it should include simplifying the Michigan business tax, and possibly scrapping the state's flat rate income tax in favor a graduated tax.
Dillon says tax reform is overdue, and needs to be part of an economic recovery plan for Michigan: "And I think we'd be remiss in the Legislature if we miss this window opportunity to give people a vision about where the state's going to be right now and if it requires going to the ballot, that's what we should do."
Dillon was part of a panel of legislative leaders addressing a business and policy conference. The Democrat is also considering a run for governor.
Legislative leaders warned businesspeople attending the Detroit Regional Chamber conference that big budget cuts are on the way, and some tax breaks may have to be eliminated.
