East Lansing, MI – East Lansing, MI (WKAR) - Lansing's two General Motors assembly plants will remain open. As the giant automaker launches a massive restructuring plan, one of its mid-Michigan plants is making plans to build a new brand.
GM announced Monday that it will close or idle six more manufacturing facilities in Michigan. But the Grand River and Delta Township assembly plants will stay open.
GM's decision to put its plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee on standby means production of the Chevy Traverse will shift to the Delta Township plant by the end of the year. Plant manager Randy Thayer says Lansing's current brands will stay intact: "We're in the process of launching the new CTS Wagon at Grand River, and looking forward to that launch, it will be out in the dealerships yet this summer. So it is very good news for Lansing."
Thayer says the changes will likely create jobs at the Delta Township plant, but it's not clear how many. He says the Saturn Outlook will eventually be phased out.
