War-funding bill back on track for passage

By AP

WASHINGTON – A crucial war-funding bill is back on track in Congress after a flare-up over controversial detainee abuse photos.

House-Senate negotiators sealed agreement on the measure Thursday night when President Barack Obama personally guaranteed the photos would never be released.

The promise came after White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel rushed to the Capitol to resolve an impasse between Senate Democratic moderates and House liberals over the photos issue.

The compromise $106 billion war-funding bill faces House and Senate votes next week. If passed, it would then be sent to Obama to be signed into law.

The House-Senate negotiating session also sealed a compromise on dealing with Guantanamo Bay detainees. The president would be allowed for the next four months to order the detainees into the United States to face trial.

WKAR’s first live pledge drive since federal funding was eliminated is happening now. Our goal for the drive is $60,000 and reaching it will bring us one step closer to closing the federal funding gap.
