Michigan State freshmen to help fill charity buses

By AP

EAST LANSING, MI – Michigan State University officials are asking the school's 7,500 incoming freshmen to start their college careers with a charity event.

The Fill-the-Bus event runs Monday and Tuesday. Four buses will be placed around the East Lansing campus, and the new students will be asked to bring school supplies or nonperishable items.

The items will go to 13 campus and community groups, including the MSU Family Resource Center, Lansing School District, Greater Lansing Food Bank and Refugee Development Center.

Goodrich Shop-Rite, Meijer and Kroger stores are donating bags.

Project organizer Karen McKnight Casey says it's designed to show that service and civic responsibility are core values at Michigan State.
