LANSING, MI – Gov. Jennifer Granholm in the past has championed a tax credit for the working poor and spoken passionately about protecting the state's neediest citizens. But social services groups say the Democratic governor hasn't spoken out loudly enough against some lawmakers' calls for cuts in welfare benefits and less money for a tax credit for low-income working families.
Granholm herself has proposed cutting the monthly stipend for those getting Supplemental Security Income as well as day care payments for needy children. In May, she eliminated eye glasses, hearing aids, dental care and similar services for Medicaid recipients.
Spokeswoman Liz Boyd said Tuesday the governor remains firmly opposed to "dangerous" cuts. She says the governor can't say much because of the confidentiality of budget talks.
