Stimulus contracts save or retain 400 Mich. jobs

By AP

LANSING, MI – Michigan businesses and agencies have reported saving or creating about 400 jobs so far with the help of federal contracts tied to the federal stimulus package.

More than 30,000 jobs have been supported nationwide. Businesses in states including Colorado, Washington, Kentucky and Ohio reported far higher job retention numbers than Michigan, which has the nation's highest unemployment rate.

The report released Thursday reflects less than $16 billion in spending tied to federal contracts, a small slice of the overall $787 billion Recovery Act.

The federal contracts report is incomplete but will be updated.

The Michigan jobs reported Thursday are in addition to about 19,500 jobs supported by state agency spending from the Recovery Act.
