EAST LANSING, MI –
Fun in the Caribbean sun is only an afterthought for 32 Michigan State University medical students and faculty visiting the Dominican Republic.
Since arriving earlier this week in the capital city of Santo Domingo, the group has had a close-up look at medical conditions in a Third World country. They've visited a leper colony and the pediatric wards of a government-run hospital where patients must provide their own bedding. Still ahead are visits to a refugee camp and a trash dump that is home to some Dominicans.
Margaret Morath, a pediatrician with the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine, says such excursions provide medical care to people who otherwise wouldn't see a doctor.
The group is to return Saturday from its weeklong visit.
