Election results could upset MI Supreme Ct. calendar

By AP

DETROIT –
Election results have created uncertainty at the Michigan Supreme Court where 18 cases are scheduled to be argued in December before Republicans take control Jan. 1.

Democratic Justice Alton Davis was defeated Tuesday and leaves the bench Dec. 31. It's unlikely the 18 cases could be resolved before his departure.

Court spokeswoman Marcia McBrien says the court is considering whether to postpone the December arguments. There's a variety of cases, including a dispute over whether a county prosecutor can investigate violations of campaign-finance law. It involves Meijer Inc.

On election night, Justice Robert Young Jr. said the court has an "interesting problem." He won re-election along with a newcomer, Wayne County Judge Mary Beth Kelly, giving conservatives a 4-3 edge.
