May 16 Saturday
The Okemos Coffee Shop celebrates its Grand Opening on 517 Day weekend, May 16–17. After a quiet whisper launch this spring, owner Angela Risk is officially welcoming the 517 to the converted auto-repair-building-turned-coffee-shop-third-space at 1732 Hamilton Rd in Okemos.
Two days of handcrafted coffee, local art on every wall, a community art-supply library, locally painted murals, plenty of cozy seating both indoors and outdoors, and the (now-famous) disco ball. Cuppa, the shop's hand-drawn mascot, will be everywhere — including a chalk-art trail across Okemos and East Lansing in the week leading up.
The shop sits 5-10 minutes from the East Lansing Art Festival, making it the natural after-festival stop. All humans welcome. No tickets, no RSVP. Just come.
The Packard Farmers Market returns for the 2026 season at the historic Packard Proving Grounds, bringing together local farmers, artisans, bakers, makers, and small businesses in a one-of-a-kind setting where history and community meet.
Formerly known as the Shelby Farmers Market, the newly rebranded Packard Farmers Market reflects its deep connection to the Packard Proving Grounds and its mission to support the preservation of this iconic historic site. The market runs Saturdays from May 16 through October 10, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., on the expansive front lawn of the Packard Proving Grounds Historic Site.
Each week, the market is arranged in neat rows across the lawn, offering a relaxed, walkable shopping experience. Vendors may park directly next to their booths, and the grass setting provides a cooler summer atmosphere ideal for tent setups. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. The market is supported by Packard Proving Grounds volunteers and local high school students earning community service hours.
The Packard Farmers Market is open on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends and will be closed Saturday, July 4. Proceeds from the market directly benefit the ongoing restoration and preservation of the Packard Proving Grounds Historic Site, owned and operated by the Packard Motor Car Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Dates: Saturdays, May 16 – October 10, 2026 *closed July 4th
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Lansing-area families are invited to Lids for Kids on Saturday, May 16, 10 am-12 pm at Frances Park, for a fun, educational bike safety event. Kids will receive a free, custom-fitted bike helmet, learn important safety tips, and enjoy games, activities, and character meet-and-greets.
Did you know? Wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by up to 85%, yet only 15% of children under the age of 14 wear one while biking. Sinas Dramis Law Firms’ Lids for Kids is helping to change that; it has already provided 14,000 helmets to Michigan children.
In addition to the helmet giveaway, other activities include balloon twisting, mini tennis, bubble art, hockey puck handling, nature exploration, crafts, a bike drawing, and more. Kids must be present to receive a helmet, and helmets must be worn to enter the bike drawing.
