Michigan’s longest?serving U?S senator, Carl Levin, says he will retire next year.
Carl Levin has served in the US Senate since 1979. The Democrat from Detroit will be 81 when his term is up in a little less than two years.
Levin says he wants to spend the rest of his time in the Senate focusing on a few issues without the distraction of a reelection campaign. Those issues include assisting manufacturing, facilitating the
U?S withdrawal from Afghanistan, closing tax loopholes for corporations, and exposing the influence of secret money in politics.
Accolades from both sides of the aisle followed news of Levin’s retirement. President Obama says Carl Levin served as a champion of anyone who’s worn a uniform or worked an assembly line.
