Michigan House OKs Bill To End Bridge Card Abuse

WKAR File Photo

The Michigan House has overwhelmingly approved legislation designed to crack down on welfare abuse.

The bill passed Thursday would require that the Department of Human Services check the U.S. Social Security Death Index once a month to see if a Bridge Card recipient has died. The department already does this, but the bill is intended to ensure that the practice continues in following administrations.

Bridge Cards are used like debit cards for state food assistance and cash programs.

Republican Representative Tim Kelly of Saginaw is the bill's sponsor. He says the bill would protect taxpayers dollars and "ensure those who are truly in need will receive assistance."

The bill will now go to the Senate for consideration.
