Buena Vista Plan Includes Summer “Make-Up” Camps

The Buena Vista school district in Saginaw County will not resume classes. That’s one of the decisions made Monday at a meeting of state and local education officials.

But, as we hear from The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Rick Pluta, there may be a plan to get kids back into classrooms very soon.

This is all according to information from the state Department of Education. It was agreed that classes are done for this school year for the district’s 420 students. That will not stop eligible seniors from graduating, or other students from advancing to the next grade.

The district will try to run four to six week “skill” camps to help students make up what they missed, and prepare for the coming school year. The camps could start as soon as Monday.

The money for those camps will not come from the state, but from federal funds. Buena Vista abruptly ceased operations after the state cut off aid payments because of debts owed by the district. The plan must still be adopted by the Buena Vista school board.
