AP Calls Eighth District Race For Rep. Slotkin

Representative Elissa Slotkin delivers remarks virtually after the Associated Press called her as the winner in Michigan's 8th Congressional Race Wednesday, November 4, 2020.

The Associated Press has called the race for Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin in Michigan’s battleground eighth congressional districtCongresswoman Elissa Slotkin flipped the eighth district, which covers Oakland, Ingham and Livingston counties, from red to blue in 2018.

This year, despite President Trump being poised to carry the district again, Slotkin defeated her Republican challenger, Paul Junge getting 51 percent of the vote to his 47 percent— netting about 17,000 more votes by boosting turnout in places like Ingham County.

“Ingham County came out strong and had a great voter participation—both absentee voting and in person and it really is important to my race,” said Slotkin.

Slotkin also improved turnout in Oakland County and cities like Rochester Hills and Brighton. She said she believes Democratic nominee Joe Biden will also win Michigan.

In a speech, Slotkin said she views the election as one of three phases, phase two will be the next 78 days and a peaceful transition of power, and phase three will be healing the country’s divisions.

Slotkin also said leaders need to step up and back official election results.

“That includes from our state reps here all the way up to cabinet level officials because the President has been very clear about what his intentions are.”

As of this writing, Junge had not yet conceded the race.
