A number of mid-Michigan school districts are offering food assistance for people facing nutritional challenges during the national coronavirus outbreak.
The Lansing school district is delivering food to more than 20 sites in the city in a manner similar to its summer food service program.
Starting Wednesday, Okemos Public Schools will provide curbside food pickup at Okemos High School.
Superintendent John Hood says they’re providing food for all Okemos students and Meridian Township residents under 18.
“Districts are working to meet basic needs providing basic food for our neighbors and our families, and it must be met,” says Hood. “It’s a community-defining moment, one I’m confident our community will step up to and meet.”
Hood says state and federal grants are offsetting the cost of the program.
He says the district may have to solicit donations in the future to ensure an adequate supply of food.
Curbside food pickup at Okemos High School will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. each weekday through April 3.
