The Chinese Lunar Year of the Sheep begins on February 19, 2015. Its commemoration is rich with traditions and rituals observed in everything from food to clothing. Ancestors are honored, and peace and happiness are bestowed on family and friends.
According to Chinese folklore, many centuries ago the Great Buddha found enlightenment under a fig tree. Inspired by this revelation, he invited all the animal of the world to join him in his celebration of the New Year. Only twelve animals came to the gathering, the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. Over time these animals came to represent the twelve signs of the Chinese Zodiac as a symbol of their loyalty to the Buddha.
The history, rituals, and traditions of Chinese New Year are celebrated alongside traditional Chinese music in this one hour special, The Year of the Sheep: A Joyful Celebration, is hosted and produced by Dr. Wanda Yang Temko.
