Maxine, a feisty, bitter Alzheimer's victim, doesn't want to move into a nursing facility. But when she meets Joe, a widower who shares her love for dance, her outlook begins to change. Although the two clash when lucid, their hazy memories overlap, and they begin an affair that rejuvenates and fulfills them. But can these lovers -- played simultaneously by an elderly twosome and a young, vivacious couple -- stay together despite their families' wishes and their fading vitality?

Sylvia is Broadway’s loving comedy by A R Gurney about a marriage, a dog, and many laughs. Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after 22 years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career, as a public-school English teacher, is beginning to offer her more opportunities. Greg brings home a dog he found in the park—or that has found him—bearing only the name “Sylvia” on her name tag. A street-smart mixture of Lab and poodle, Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between husband and wife. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. To Kate, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. And Sylvia thinks Kate just doesn’t understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives.See “Sylvia” on April 26 and 27 at 7 p.m. or 1 p.m. on April 28. Tickets are $5 for community members and are available online at www.jccmi.edu/pottercenter or in person from the Potter Center Box Office, open 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, 517.796.8600.
