A bill meant to streamline the permitting process for handguns is set to become state law.
It would also extend the period of time permits are valid, from 10 days to 30 days.
Republican state Representative Paul Opsommer sponsored the bill.
“That ten days, if you get busy, can go really fast," he says. "And so it will be easier, more convenient for you to get that permit to purchase.”
The bill originally sought to eliminate state background checks for all pistol sales. Lawmakers cut out that language during the final days of their “lame duck” session.
Governor Snyder last week vetoed a bill that would have let people with special permits carry concealed weapons into places like schools, daycare centers, and places of worship.
