Lansing , MI – The city of Lansing may soon see a reduction in public safety services.
This week the city of Lansing sent layoff notices to 44 police officers. These cuts are part of 102 city jobs on the chopping block, as part of next year's budget.Tom Krug is the Executive Director of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 141 in Lansing. He says morale in the police department is at an all time low.
"I mean, they don't want to come to work. We've told them to keep their heads up high. They have not been abusing their sick time. They're coming to work. They're doing the best job that they can, but when you know a month from now, that this is life changing for your family, it's kind of hard to be really happy, chipper and aggressive, I guess."
Some jobs could be saved. Union representatives are currently meeting with city officials to discuss concessions. Lansing's final budget will go into effect July 1st.
