EAST LANSING, MI –
An owner of the Ambassador Bridge Company says his family financially supports a group that papered a Detroit neighborhood with fake eviction notices. But Matthew Moroun says he and his family had no advance knowledge of the publicity stunt by the group Americans for Prosperity. We have more from Michigan Public Radio's Rick Pluta.
AUDIO:
Americans for Prosperity plastered homes in Detroit's Delray neighborhood with flyers headlined "eviction notice" across the top. The group says the flyers were meant to be attention-grabbing and to warn people families and businesses would be displaced if a new bridge is built.
The group opposes a proposed new bridge across the Detroit River that would compete with the Ambassador Bridge. The group refuses to say where it gets its money. But Ambassador Bridge Company President Matthew Moroun acknowledged on public television that his family financially supports the group, even though he does not always agree with its tactics.
"We took no part in the eviction notice thing, didn't know it was going to happen, didn't participate with it and I condemn it, as well," he says.
Maroun says he will continue to donate to Americans for Prosperity, which has also paid for a statewide TV ad campaign opposing the new bridge.
