Ahead on Current State: Michigan Remembers D-Day

Fri. June 6 - 9am - 90.5 WKAR | Today's Generation Honors the Greatest Generation. Current State from WKAR presents a special 30-minute audio documentary commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Historian Roger Rosentreter narrates the radio special which mixes music, historic sound and the voices of Michigan veterans who stormed the beaches at Normandy, France, and who parachuted behind enemy lines to win the day.

"Michigan Remembers D-Day" begins with stories of our state's staggering production of war materiel: the planes, tanks and trucks that helped to defeat the Axis powers.

At the core of this radio special are firsthand accounts of "the longest day," from Michigan veterans including Francisco Vega, Ernst Floeter and Earl Harmon. These accounts were drawn from WKAR interviews with Michigan veterans for the 2007 series, "The War: Michigan Voices."

The program concludes on the shores of Lake Michigan. In this final chapter of "Michigan Remembers D-Day," we hear the story from today of the Lakeshore High School marching band, from Stevensville, Mich., as they prepare for travel to Normandy. The band will perform a concert there on the solemn occasion of June 6.

Don't miss this powerful account of Michigan's war veterans and those who honor them.

Current State airs at 9:00 a.m. on 90.5 WKAR, noon on AM 870 and again at 6:00 p.m. on 90.5. Stories are available on-demand online beginning each afternoon.
