GOP gov candidates head to Standish over Gitmo

By AP

LANSING, MI – The tiny community of Standish is suddenly becoming an important stop for Republican gubernatorial candidates campaigning against bringing Guantanamo detainees from Cuba to the state prison.

The Obama administration has sent officials to look over the maximum security prison. It's also considering moving the detainees to a federal military prison in Leavenworth, Kan.

On Wednesday, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard held a news conference in Standish to say bringing the detainees to the site would be "a great detriment to the state."

On Thursday, U.S. Pete Hoekstra of Holland plans to participate in a town hall meeting to explain his reasons for keeping the detainees out of Michigan - and the U.S.

Bouchard and Hoekstra are among six Republicans running for governor.
