On Lansing’s east side, commerce and conservation meet at “Art in the Wild”

The area around the Frandor shopping center is the site of one of mid-Michigan’s most ambitious redevelopment projects. Part of the Red Cedar Renaissance plan would place public art in a re-vamped section of a stormwater drain. Current State’s Kevin Lavery talks with two organizers of the “Art In the Wild” project.

New development is rising along Michigan Avenue on Lansing’s east side. The framework of what will become the Skyvue Apartments is taking shape just off the Frandor shopping center. There are big plans for that corridor where Lansing, East Lansing and the MSU campus meet.

One part of the so-called Red Cedar Renaissance aims to clean the stormwater that empties into the Red Cedar River while raising environmental awareness through art.

Current State’s Kevin Lavery talks about “Art in the Wild” with Dr. Melody Angel, who's chairing the project, and Theresa Lark, executive director of the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council.

Kevin Lavery served as a general assignment reporter and occasional local host for Morning Edition and All Things Considered before retiring in 2023.
