State Lawmakers Considering Legal Driving Limit For THC

schooldrugtesting.net

Some state lawmakers say it’s time to set a legal driving limit for THC – the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana.

The Michigan Public Radio Network’s Jake Neher has more.

The measure would only apply to state-certified medical marijuana patients.

Republican state Representative Klint Kesto is sponsoring legislation that would allow patients to have up to five nanograms of THC per one milliliter of blood.

“We want to make sure our streets are safe,” he says.  “But, at the same time, we’re not trying to penalize someone for taking their medicine a day or two before.”

The five nanogram limit it similar to laws passed in other states. Medical marijuana activists have charged that limit is not based on sound science and cannot adequately determine whether a person is impaired.

Jake Neher is a reporter for the Michigan Public Radio Network. He covers the State Legislature and other political events in Lansing.
