The latest medical marijuana ordinance was introduced at Monday night’s Lansing City Council meeting, but a public hearing date was not set.

Lansing City Council was expected to set a public hearing for the new medical marijuana ordinance at Monday’s meeting, but after some debate they decided to postpone.

The tentative plan was to hold the public hearing June 26- two weeks after the council’s June 12 Committee of the Whole meeting.

But after some back and forth over how much time was appropriate for all members to review the ordinance, the council decided to wait until after the June 12 meeting before setting a public hearing date. That would give them all a chance to weigh in on the ordinance and would allow time for changes to be made to it if necessary.

Council Vice President Carol Wood said, "no one wants apparently to have the public hearing now, with the draft that we have. Everybody wants to have some kind of input into that."

Wood said the council will set a date for public hearing on the medical marijuana ordinance at their meeting June 26, or their first meeting in July.

Earlier Monday, when speaking with WKAR, Wood pointed out that regardless of when the council votes on an ordinance, it "wouldn't go into effect until the state was ready to start doing their licensing."

According to council member Adam Hussain's comments at Monday's meeting, the state may not be ready to begin their licensing until December 2017 or early 2018.
