The East Lansing City Council has approved a resolution calling on Michigan State University to release thousands of documents withheld from the public tied to the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal.
The council unanimously adopted the non-binding resolution during a virtual meeting Tuesday.
It asks MSU to release about 6,000 documents related to the school’s investigation of convicted sex abuser Larry Nassar.
Advocates for survivors of Nassar’s abuse as well as Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel have asked the MSU Board of Trustees to release the documents on multiple occasions.
Councilmember Lisa Babcock says MSU has an opportunity to lead the way for other universities.
“I would go further and personally, as an alum, as a one time — probably never again — adjunct at Michigan State, as a volunteer, as a donor, as a member of this community, ask you from the bottom of my heart to release those 6,000 documents,” said Babcock.
The AG’s office has said it would have no choice but to close its investigation if the university refuses to release the documents.
