State lacks labor to meet rising home demand

Flickr

One of the first casualties of the Great Recession was the national housing market; home values reached historic lows after the bubble burst in 2007.  Now, a rising demand for new housing is driving a nationwide recovery.  But the problem is that many skilled workers who lost their jobs in the last six years have moved on.

Residential home builders are struggling to find enough labor to meet the demand.  Robert Filka, CEO of the Home Builders Association of Michigan, and James Lynch, program director for the Residential Building Program at Lansing Community College, join Current State to discuss the problem.
