WKAR WORLD adds five hours daily for grades 6-12, two hours of K-5 programming added to WKAR main channel beginning Monday, Mar. 30, 2020
Responding to the need for educational resources for students as schools close due to the coronavirus, WKAR is partnering with PBS, the WORLD Channel, and the Michigan Association of Public Broadcasters to bring Michigan viewers expanded At-Home Learning programming beginning on Monday, March 30. These daily free-over-the-air broadcasts will feature the best in public media science, history and other educational programming.
The new WKAR WORLD At-Home Learning block -- suited to WORLD’s everyday schedule of news, information and documentary programming -- has been carefully curated and supplemented with related assets from WKAR PBS LearningMedia, a free online service of thousands of compelling educational resources.
In our mid-Michigan area, WKAR WORLD Channel is broadcast over the air on channel 23.2 and carried on many Comcast and WOW services.
“In these challenging times, our public media mission to support students with the educational resources needed to thrive is more important than ever,” said Susi Elkins, WKAR general manager and director of Broadcasting. “While our WORLD At-Home Learning programs are geared to middle and high school students, our 24/7 PBS KIDS service and daytime on our main channel engage children in primary-school grades.”
“With a commitment to educational multimedia, WKAR delivers curriculum-based resources that support parents and teachers in achieving children’s learning goals,” said Robin Pizzo, WKAR director of Education. “We recognize that many families do not have access to the internet or computers at home, so we are leveraging our public media TV broadcast channels to reach teachers, students and caregivers across mid-Michigan.”
WKAR's primary channel (23.1) has also expanded At-Home Learning, with a new programming block from noon to 2 p.m. on weekdays. The newest At-Home Learning block features WKAR's own Curious Crew, WCMU’s Into the Outdoors, and PBS KIDS shows SciGirls and Peg + Cat. The addition increases programming for kids from 7.5 to 9.5 hours per day.
In addition to these expanded education broadcasts, WKAR has created new resources under the station's WKAR Family initiative, including a weekday newsletter. The WKAR Family and PBS KIDS newsletter is emailed to subscribers each weekday with ideas and resources to keep kids playing and learning at home while school is closed. Coming soon is a weekly edition of the newsletter for educators.
