LANSING — Hundreds of demonstrators gathered Saturday on the east lawn of the Michigan State Capitol in Lansing, joining protests taking place across the country to mark former President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday — a day that also featured a military parade in Washington, D.C.

The protest, one of several scheduled in Michigan, brought a sizable crowd comparable to last month’s “Hands Off” demonstration, filling the grassy areas on both sides of the Capitol steps. People continued to arrive throughout the early afternoon, streaming in from surrounding sidewalks as speeches got underway.

“I’m on the east lawn of the Capitol where hundreds have gathered,” WKAR reporter Andrew Roth said from the scene. “Attendees I’ve talked to say they’re not concerned about the possibility of things turning violent, noting that previous demonstrations have remained peaceful.”

Organizers said the event would include roughly two hours of speeches, followed by a march down Michigan Avenue around 2 p.m.

WKAR will continue to follow developments throughout the day.
