LANSING, MI – Demolition of the 88 year-old building began Friday morning. By early afternoon the east wing of the school had been leveled.
Demolition crews are separating the building's steel and brick so the materials can be recycled.
Pattengill opened its doors in 1921. Voters approved a bond in 2003 to build a new middle school about a mile from the old site. The new Pattengill School opened three years ago.
Demolition is expected to last a week or two, with cleanup of the site continuing throughout the summer.
