LANSING, MI –

The Ingham County Board of Commissioners will consider a proposal to dismantle the county road commission board. The county services committee unanimously approved the tentative measure Tuesday night.

County Commissioner Andy Schor sponsors the proposal. He says the move would bring road operations under the direct authority of the board of commissioners and create a 'Department of Transportation and Roads.'

Supporters claim the measure would increase efficiency, accountability and save money. A bi-partisan group of county commissioners describe the current road commission board as dysfunctional. They cite infighting over racial quotas and alleged micromanagement.

The Board of Commissioners is scheduled to vote on the proposal on December 13. The change is contingent on state legislation that could be approved before the end of the year.
