Group Challenges Citizenship Box during Elections

A group is challenging Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson's decision to have a citizenship question placed on August primary ballot applications.Members of the Michigan Election Reform Alliance are to speak Wednesday morning on the steps of the state Capitol in Lansing.

Some voters were denied ballots during the Aug. 7 primary after refusing to check off a box on a ballot application confirming their U.S. citizenship.

The secretary of state's office sent a memo to county clerks around noon that day to let elections workers know voters didn't have to confirm their citizenship before receiving ballots,

The Michigan Election Reform Alliance says asking voters to confirm their citizenship is illegal.

Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed a bill last month requiring voters to check a similar citizenship box.
