The commissiontasked with redrawing the state’s congressional district lines plans to hold its first meeting later this month.
On September 17 and 18 the Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission will meet for the first time since the passage of Proposal Two. The commission brings together 13 randomly selected people tasked with drawing U.S. Congressional andMichigan State House and Senate district lines based on the 2020 census.
Before the passage of Proposal Two back in 2018, the Michigan State Legislature wasresponsible for redistricting, requiring a majority vote to be passed. That meant that the political party with the most power had the potential to determine district lines.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said the meetings will mark a historic time for Michigan making it the first time a group of citizens with balanced political affiliations come together to make elections more fair.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the commissioners will meet virtually with the meetings being live streamed.
