Q: How can I continue to encourage my children,  disappointed over COVID still being here?

A: This is difficult because we all want COVID to go away and it’s disappointing that it is still here and affecting our normal way of life. However, communication, routines and fun memories offer great ways to encourage children to stay positive in spite of COVID.

We are not capable of controlling much during this time, but we are able to control our emotions and reactions due to COVID, just as any other negative circumstance.  A good communication strategy is to provide an understanding, at the development level of the child, of what’s happening in the world to reduce COVID’s harm. Discussing negative feelings provides an opportunity to share disappointments and release sadness. Be sure to offer these opportunities frequently as plans continue to change for safety protocols. Children are always smarter than we think, and information supports their ability to reason.

Maintaining routines is another effective way to help children stay positive. This will decrease the impact of the ever-changing circumstances of the pandemic. A consistent bedtime story, mealtime and daily walk are great ways to establish regular routines.

Finally, strive to create fun memories. Game night, sidewalk chalk challenges and family bake-offs are a few ideas that will keep laughter in the home and togetherness at the forefront of COVID life. This will ensure children are able to stay positive because positivity is all around.

Happy Learning,
