A: Reading doesn’t have to stop when warm weather beckons. To keep children motivated, explore fun ways to take reading outdoors.
I loved biking with my children all around the neighborhood with the library as a final destination. Local libraries are open for book pick up that can be scheduled in advance of your biking adventure. Be sure to attach a basket to the bike to carry all the fun titles. Families can even include the promise of a book picnic afterwards. Don’t forget to include fruits, healthy snacks and water. Once everyone has soared on swings and slid down slides, take a break with a good book.
StoryWalks are a special treat for readers young and old. “A StoryWalk® encourages families to enjoy reading and the outdoors by posting a children's book - a page or two at a time - at intervals in a park, hiking trail or other outdoor site,” stated Capital Area District Library. There are several located throughout our Mid-Michigan community. Although many have been closed due to wintry weather or COVID, some are beginning to open up. You can even create your own version of a StoryWalk® in your backyard. Simply share in writing and illustrating a story. Laminate or slide the pages inside a clear page protector to protect from spring rains. Place or hang along a path and enjoy the memories.
