The Detroit Free Press reports that Michigan State University President Lou Anna Simon plans to step down from her position on Thursday

The Free Press cited unnamed sources for its information.

The move would come one day after Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years on seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The counts involve more than 160 girls and women over more than two decades.

Simon has been associated with MSU for her entire career - from the mid-1970s on.

MSU Trustees Dianne Byrum and Mitch Lyons had both called for Simon's resignation this week.
